National Stereotypes

Page history last edited by Xenix 2 years, 8 months ago

Stereotypes are a natural way for one people to generalize about another, for good or ill. The information here is meant to be seen as "Man on the Street" opinions and reflects the most common stereotyping of one nation by another. Your character should not feel bound to endorse these opinions, nor should you believe that every character you meet from a given country will act as you believe them to. This does, however, give a good indication of the general opinions floating around in a given country that your character might have grown up with or otherwise been exposed to.

Chō: "Alright, you guys are great and all. Thanks for the food and buying our stuff and everything, but I swear, if you send me one more fresh-off-the-farm, wet-behind-the-ears country yokel, I'm going to scream!"

Eurum Islands: "Fat, happy, and more people than you can shake a stick at. It's a bit of a long haul, but well worth it. You can eat well for months with one good raid."

Miln: "Can you believe what those.. those hayseeds do over there!? It's atrocious! Why, they should be grateful to have been offered the rare opportunity to join a True Civilization like the Milanese Empire! But no, it was simply not to be."

Sarantica: "Those farming types? Oh, yes, yes, I love some of their delicacies that the traders bring us. I don't think I've ever met somebody from there, though."

Süminthur: "One day, my brother, we shall unite and overthrow the oppressive Milanese Tyranny! Until then, my pearls for your swine?"

Thevia: "The state of their education system is laughable at best, and cringe-worthy most of the time. If it weren't for the Children of Iomei and our technological handouts, they would have degraded into savages centuries ago. They're well-meaning, though, which counts for something."

Afrene: "They've done Litanaea proud by revolutionizing the way we look at the world and get our jobs done. They're even doing us a personal favor by providing our youngsters with new opportunities and chances to get ahead in life!"

Eurum Islands: "The closest of the Westerners, and the prickliest. Hit them hard, fast, and then get out before they get the heavy weapons unlimbered."

Miln: "They're driving the Industrial Revolution and they have enough propriety that any true gentleman or lady will overlook their occasional.. 'peculiarities'. Not a bad place to visit, either, if you can ignore the looks some of them give you. They certainly don't care for visitors."

Sarantica: "I've got a nice Chō pistol and all the best foreign weapons come from there. They're an insular sort, but seem nice enough as long as you're polite."

Süminthur: "Don't worry, Miln's gonna come for you eventually, too. Maybe then you'll understand. Friggin' enigmatic jerks who won't give you the time of day."

Thevia: "Craftsmen without par and laborers par excellence. That said, they have a distinct lack of appreciation for the intellectual and theoretical side of science."

Afrene: "One bee sting hurts, but a hundred might kill you. We can't stop them entirely, but at the same time, they're not trying to cripple us."

Chō: "One of these days, the warships will be going in the opposite direction, buddy."

Miln: "A nuisance, to be sure, but hardly the end of the world, nor likely to be the end of our Empire."

Sarantica: "It's best if you just give them what they want, really. Unless you have the forces to hold them off, or I did hear of an island that talked them into accepting a yearly tithe instead of raiding and pillaging and destroying the islanders' hard work."

Süminthur: "I don't see what all the fuss is about. They're just trying to survive and if the rest of Litanaea bothered to actually talk to somebody different instead of shooting at them, there wouldn't be any problems at all!"

Thevia: "They have driven naval technology as much as scientific curiosity has these past centuries. We'll outstrip them yet, though. Between new ships and weapons, the tide is indeed turning."

Afrene: "Uptight, self-centered, imperialistic bastards. Just about the only good thing you can say about them is that their economy is a little better suited towards individual success. Even then, they're still pricks."

Chō: "Nice enough buyers, always paying on-time and willing to stand back and let me do my job, but... one of these days you just know they're going to make a grab for us. I aim to see that they pull back a bloody stump on that day."

Eurum Islands: "A wonderful collection of commodities, and massive stretches of coastline that no army could possibly patrol properly means good pickings for us. Don't run into their army, though."

Sarantica: "Pushy neighbors, thinking they're better than us just because their islands are bigger. And they're always starting fights from what I hear and telling everybody how they should act. Next thing you'll know, they'll be coming up here and doing that nonsense."

Süminthur: "They've strong-armed their way into agreements with us by dint of their having a navy to speak of and generally being bigger than us. I'd just a soon they all fell in a hole and died, though. Grabby jerks just don't know when to stay on their own damn island."

Thevia: "Civilized chaps, with a proper respect for education and knowledge. They do have a rather bizarre capacity for self-delusion and self-contradiction though."

Afrene: "Who?"

Chō: "I can't say as I've ever had need to go up there, but I've shipped some pieces and parts up that direction on occasion. Their agents know the right way to talk to people, though."

Eurum Islands: "A little hard to get to, and lots of leg work once you're there, but the pickings couldn't be easier if the locals brought them out on silver platters."

Miln: "Poor savages, living in such squalor and anarchy! We must do something to bring the light of civilization to them. Can you imagine living somewhere that godtouched are allowed to just run amok without one of the Gods' own Magi to protect the common people!?"

Süminthur: "Good trading partners, if you know how to deal with them, but I think they're next on Miln's hit list. We'll help how we can when the day comes, but they're probably gonna be on their own."

Thevia: "A wonderful market, if a bit out of the way. They'll buy anything that goes in and every now and then something fascinating comes out. Usually it's a new diseases, but what can you do?"

Süminthur as seen by...

Afrene: "Valiant soldiers in the fight against imperialism. Also very handy in a pinch, although I'm not sure I want one moving in next door."

Chō: "They're certifiable. Every last one of them. They're a wonderful weapons market, but I always feel like I'm giving the brewery keys to an alcoholic."

Eurum Islands: "Totally not worth it. They're a nice enough stopover for supplies, but a nation full of independence-crazed weapon-toting crazies makes for poor raiding. "

Miln: "A quaint little nation filled with quaint little people. It's a pity for them that every chance we get to invite them into the Empire, other considerations draw us away. They will see the light eventually, though. It's only logical, you know."

Sarantica: "The constant warnings and veiled (or not so veiled) threats concerning Miln get a little old after a while, but they are closest neighbor besides Miln, and valued trading partners, so the occasional ranting can be tolerated.

Thevia: "I wish they'd grow up and stay conquered already. I mean, honestly, how dysfunctional can a population be that it fails to remain proper subjugated not once, but three times!?"

Afrene: "Industrious and more than willing to work for the good of all. After all, their plows make our fields produce more than enough for them to feed both of our populations, and then some. Solid, dependable business partners."

Chō: "They're nice fellows. We have to steal all the best things, but they share well enough. A bit too brainy, though, knowwhatimean?

Eurum Islands: "Their ships might be a little faster than most, but they're also more numerous. We've many a fine vessel from their hands."

Miln: "They're okay. A bit uncooth about private matters, and terribly snobbish for such a lesser nation, though."

Sarantica: "Who? The traders? Oh, them! yeah, they're great. Bring lots of interesting things from the South. ... Note that I said 'interesting', not 'useful'."

Süminthur: "Intellectual bastards, hoarding everything for themselves. There's a reason the Ethasaians left them!"
