Icefox Island
Adjective: Icefoxian
Seat of Government: Icefox Hollow
Major Islands:
Icefox Island: 25,137 sq mi (65,104 sq km) [West Virginia]
Population: ~4 million
Government: An island Governor, advised by a Council appointed by popular vote.
Economy: What isn't farmland or forest is quarries. Icefox Island is largely a land of raw materials and the people to turn them into something else. Icefox Hollow boasts some of the best woodworkers in Litanaea, while Aelcrest's stonemasons are unmatched even by the famed marble sculptors of Whitestone. Starrypond, in an effort to not be outdone by their sister-cities, has made a concerted effort to focus on cooking. Some PR work, political leveraging, and capital have founded not only a culinary institute, but also the premiere one in the entirety of the Milanese Empire.
Politics: Icefox Island technically has nobles, but they come in three varieties: the imported milanese, a few natives that have been "recognized for service", and the vast majority of the original aristocracy that are pretty much ignored by the milanese government. The latter category has traditionally filled about half of the seats on the Governor's Council, sometimes through vote-buying and occasionally through honest-to-goodness popularity.
Religion: Icefox Island has a long and colourful Iomeian history, having embraced the religion when the first thevan missionaries turned up on their shore, centuries ago. From then until now they have remained a deeply religious people, if one in fairly frequent conflict with the thevan church over details of worship.
While thevan Iomeism can be rather...ostentatious at times, the icefoxian branch of the religion favors more quiet, but intense, devotion and worship. They frown, strongly, on the use of faith medals.
Culture: Often regard as a slightly softer version of Süminthur, icefoxian natives are not as violently independent as their northern allies, but they can get mighty testy when they think they're being backed into a corner and oppressed. They've been quite happy to adopt milanese as a second official language and the entire island eventually went bilingual to accommodate their imperial overlords, but any attempts to actually stamp out their native language or outright assimilation have tended to fall between 'abject failure' and 'backfiring spectacularly'.
History: Icefox Island had been content to live peacefully by itself, allied with the northern Süminthur, up until Miln and Afrene drug it kicking and screaming into the Great Litanaean War. The island changed hands several times before finally ending up as part of the Milanese Empire and grudgingly given something resembling free rein domestically.
